The netbook fad has run its course and laptop makers are responding to consumers’ new demands: Keep the small screens, add some more power under the hood. The HP Pavilion dm1z is a perfect example of this new breed, keeping the ultra-portable 11-inch screen but adding an AMD Vision processor with integrated graphics (also known as the Fusion platform). This combo allows for surprisingly strong performance and a solid battery life. Productivity tasks are a breeze, and it’s even capable of some more advanced tasks like HD video streaming and light media editing. It isn’t glamorous, and the compact screen size is a deal-breaker for most folks, but overall it’s an excellent value for the price. Expect to see a bunch of copycats in the coming months.
